Janakpur is one of the major cities of Nepal popular for its religious and tourism significance. It is located in Dhanusa district and is about 375km far from capital city Kathmandu. It is accessible via both roadways and airways. We, being enticed by this facilitated city flew for about 35 minutes to reach there.
This legendary city with great ancient, religious and historical reservation has still maintained its grandeur in contemporary society as well. Intellectual ascetics still visit Janakpur with great honor. Janakpur was the capital of ancient Mithila state and it was named after the then intellectual emperor king, Janak. Famous for the philosophies of ideal king Janak and the godly incarnation of his daughter Sita, Janakpur is regarded as the center of knowledge and wisdom. There is still some remaining of the historical period that we followed and reached there.
Built with the proper adjustment of Hindu and Muslim art, Janaki Temple is a popular and artistic temple at Janakpur. Every year, thousands of tourists come to visit this highly artistic temple. There are several attractive and artistic rooms, worship rooms, pavilion, and store place inside the temple. This temple covers an area of 4,860 sq. ft and it is 50 ft. tall. It is a birth place of goddess Sita and Lord Ram-Sita got married at this sacred place. An Indian queen have spend nine hundred thousand (9 Lakhs) to built this temple so it is also called Nau Lakhe Mandir.
According to the mythological story, there was a divine bow of Shiva but no one could string the bow. Once Sita easily lift that bow then king Janak realized that Sita is not an ordinary human and announced she should wed by whoever was able to string the divine bow of Shiva. Though many suitors tried no one could succeed so King became depressed.
At that time, son of the King of Ayodhya, Ramchandra came to lift the bow. At first no one trusts that he could lift it up but he alone lift the bow and it suddenly broke into 3 pieces. First piece flew over, the second piece penetrated into land and the third piece fell into Dhanusa spot which is even worshipped today as Dhanusha Dham (Pilgrimage). That place is still believed to be there at the middle of Dhanusagar.
King Janak became very happy and organized a big marriage celebration of Ram and Sita. This is why we still celebrate Bibaha Panchami festival in Magh Sukla Panchami. In this occasion, many pilgrims, tourists, priests, minks come to visit Janakpur. In this day, the idols of Ram and Sita are rotated around Janakpur city and people still participate in the occasion as member of marriage procession of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita.
Not only in Bibahapanchami, there is big fair in the festivals like, Ram Nawami, Holi. Ramnawami is celebrated on the auspicious occasion of birthday of Lord Ram. Dhanushadham is 20 km far from Janaki Temple and pilgrims travel there by Jeep.
Apart from that, Ramananda Memorial has its own significance. There are marriage pavilion, Hanuman gadi, Sita Kunda (Pond), Rani Pati, Ratnasagar, Bihar Kunda, Gangasagar, Agni Kunda, Udayaswor Mahadev, Praneshwor, Kupeshwor and other popular sacred sites at Janakpurdham premises. Janakpur is important place from historical, religious as well as tourism perspective.
